Which test do you take?

Which civics test you take depends on when you filed your Form N-400, not on when your interview is:

Look for the "Received Date" on your Form I-797C receipt notice.

The two tests side by side

Both tests are oral: the officer asks the questions out loud and you answer out loud. The officer stops as soon as you reach the passing score, or as soon as you can no longer reach it.

How much overlap is there?

38 of the 100 questions on the 2008 test appear word for word on the 2025 test. For 19 of them, the list of accepted answers is not the same on both tests, so study the answers for the test you’re taking. Every question page on this site shows whether the question is on both tests.

Questions about people in office

Some questions ask who holds an office right now, such as the President, the Vice President or the Speaker of the House, and others depend on where you live: your U.S. senators, representative, governor and state capital. Answer with the people in office on the day of your interview. USCIS posts changes on its test updates page.

If you’re 65 or older

With the 65/20 special consideration you study only 20 marked questions from your test. The officer asks 10 and you need 6 correct. See the 65/20 questions and who qualifies.
